01 / PORTRAIT
Summer lingers
in November flowers.
Buddleja, or butterfly bush, gathers its small flowers into long clusters. In my garden photographs, butterflies rest on the pink blooms. The cultivar names are not recorded; I describe the plants as I have watched them over eight years.

BRAN · NOVEMBER 2026
I have four shrubs bought in pots at HORNBACH eight years ago: two purple and two pink. They have grown very large and are very resilient in my garden.
I tidy them two or three times each season to support flowering. Here the flowers appear in July and continue until November; buddleja is still blooming at the beginning of this month.
I keep this seasonal tidying separate from pruning to shape the shrub. I have not yet measured their height, and I do not assign a cultivar name from flower colour alone.
03 / CARE
A few useful pointers.
Sun and drainage
For summer-flowering buddlejas, choose sun and well-drained soil. Allow room for the shrub to develop.
Spent flowers
Removing browned flower clusters may encourage more flowers. This tidying is different from hard pruning the whole shrub.
Prune according to species
B. davidii flowers on new growth and is pruned in early spring. B. alternifolia flowers on the previous year’s wood and is pruned after flowering. Check the identification before pruning.
